Remodeling
Ideas for throwing stones into your home don't require you to do any heavy bathroom remodeling. Serve fruit in stone bowls purchased from home furnishings stores. Pool together a personal collection of striped and spotted stones. Add water and a flower for a splash of color.Stimulate your senses by including a variety of materials and textures in your home. Although man-made items--foam-filled chairs and plastic-encased electronics--abound, elements from the natural world can balance these with a sense of solidity and timelessness. Rather, these design choices will make your surroundings more interesting.
* Stone soup Gather together a potluck of small stones from lakeshores, riverbeds, or the surrounding neighborhood. Then, stir them together in a glass bowl. Add water to bring out their colors and textures. For a dry, sculptural arrangement, stack pebbles in various sizes, shapes, and colors on a broad, flat stone.
* Stonewares Some everyday items, such as toothbrush holders, soap dishes, and bookends, are available in carved stone. Check out home furnishings stores and catalogs, as well as stationery and craft stores for stone products similar to this bowl. Many of the items even have dual uses, such as votive candleholders that work as flower vases.
* Stone wall If you don't have a soaring stone fireplace--which most of us don't--you can still get the same look of smooth, rounded texture on the wall with a stone wall-hanging. Use epoxy to glue small stones close together on a piece of thin plywood or sturdy cardboard, then frame it with pieces of molding and hang it on the wall.
* Sticks and stones Use polished rocks to cover dirt in planters or to fill pot saucers for a natural boost to an organic decorating accent.
